Common questions and tips from our work with Dickson customers.
- How much gravel do I need for my driveway?
- Measure the length and width of the area in feet, then decide how deep the layer should be. Multiply length by width by depth (in feet) and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A drive that needs a new base takes a deeper layer than one that only needs a top coat. If you are unsure, call with your measurements and we will help you work out the load.
- What kind of gravel works best for a driveway?
- Most driveways use two layers. The base is a larger, angular stone or a crushed mix that packs down hard and carries the weight of vehicles. The top layer is a smaller crushed stone that drives smoothly and drains well. Rounded stone like pea gravel looks nice in paths and beds, but it shifts under tires, so it is a poor choice for the main drive.
Tip
Clear a path for the dump truck
Before delivery day, walk the route from the road to the drop spot. Move vehicles, trailers and toys out of the way. Look up for low power lines and tree limbs, since the bed lifts high when it dumps. Avoid soft ground after heavy rain, because a loaded truck can sink or leave ruts. Mark septic tanks, drain lines and anything buried near the drop spot.
Tip
Fix the low spots before new stone
Fresh gravel will not last on a drive that holds water. Before your load arrives, find the spots where puddles sit after rain. Rake out loose stone and fill deep ruts first. A slight crown in the middle of the drive helps water run off to the sides instead of soaking in. A little prep work makes the new layer stay put much longer.
